Sometimes when couples struggle with infertility, they may require alternative ways of conceiving a child. One of those ways is through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in Ontario.
IVF is a great option for women who have ovulation disorders, endometriosis, unexplained fertility, or issues with their fallopian tubes. It’s also a feasible solution for men who suffer from fertility issues.
At ONE Fertility Kitchener Waterloo, we believe everyone has a right to conceive and we have made it our mission to ensure that’s possible. Below is a breakdown of the IVF services we offer in Ontario and how you can get IVF funding.
Our In-Vitro Fertilization Services in Ontario
In-vitro fertilization is a popular fertility treatment that involves removing mature eggs from a woman’s ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory. The eggs are fertilized in either a special culture medium or by intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
After being fertilized, the eggs are incubated and examined under a microscope for signs of fertilization. Once eggs are fertilized and begin to grow, they are then called embryos.
After three to five days, the embryos are implanted into the woman’s uterus. Typically, around 80% of harvested eggs are fertilized.
How Much Does In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Cost in Ontario?
There are a few factors that determine the cost of in-vitro fertilization, as it can vary from patient to patient. Some of these factors include:
- The patient’s medical history and conditions
- The specific procedure/method that’s most suitable for the patient’s particular situation
- The medication that’s prescribed
- Diagnostic tests the doctor may require
With OHIP
Government funding for IVF is available in Ontario. It covers one IVF cycle per eligible patient per lifetime. Most of the diagnostic tests required before IVF services in Ontario are also covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP); however, should you require more than one cycle, any additional cycle will not be covered by your OHIP. Speak to your doctor to find out if you are eligible for government funding for IVF.
Without OHIP
For those who do not have OHIP coverage, or who prefer not to wait on funded IVF waitlist, they may choose to pay for all in-vitro fertilization costs out of pocket. We will provide you with the necessary receipts, so that you can get reimbursed (if eligible) from your private insurer. You may also be able to claim these expenses on your taxes and receive a tax credit.
